  • Validator Selection: The system randomly selects a validator to propose the next block. The selection often depends on the size of the stake and sometimes the length of time coins have been staked.

  • Block Validation: The chosen validator verifies transactions and creates a new block.

  • Reward Distribution: Validators receive rewards, usually in the form of transaction fees or newly minted coins.

  • Penalties: If a validator acts maliciously or fails to validate properly, they can lose part or all of their staked coins, a process called slashing.


This mechanism encourages honest behavior and discourages attacks, as validators risk losing their stake if they try to cheat the system.

Proof of Stake offers several advantages over Proof of Work, which have made it increasingly popular among newer blockchain projects:

Cardano uses a PoS protocol named Ouroboros, which emphasizes security and formal verification. It aims to provide a scalable and sustainable blockchain platform.

Polkadot employs a nominated Proof of Stake system where nominators back validators with their stakes, sharing rewards and risks.

Challenges and Criticisms of Proof of Stake

Since validators are chosen based on stake size, those with more coins have greater influence, which could lead to centralization.

In theory, validators might vote on multiple blockchain forks without penalty, potentially causing network instability. Various PoS designs address this through penalties and slashing.

PoS protocols can be more complex to design and implement securely compared to PoW.
