At its core, mining involves solving complex puzzles, adding new blocks to the blockchain, and earning rewards for the effort. What Is Bitcoin Mining?
Bitcoin mining is the process by which new Bitcoin transactions are verified and added to the blockchain, the public ledger of all Bitcoin activity. Miners use powerful computers to solve mathematical puzzles that confirm the legitimacy of transactions. When a miner successfully solves a puzzle, they add a new block of transactions to the blockchain.
This process serves two main purposes:
Securing the network: By requiring miners to solve difficult puzzles, the network prevents fraud and double-spending.
Issuing new Bitcoin: Miners receive Bitcoin rewards for their work, which introduces new coins into circulation.
How Mining Keeps the Bitcoin Network Secure
The Bitcoin network relies on a system called Proof of Work (PoW). This system requires miners to perform computational work to solve puzzles. The difficulty of these puzzles adjusts regularly to ensure blocks are added approximately every 10 minutes.
Here’s how mining protects the network:
Preventing double-spending: Miners confirm that each Bitcoin transaction is valid and not a duplicate.
Making attacks expensive: To alter the blockchain, an attacker would need to control more than half of the mining power, which is costly and difficult.
Encouraging honest behavior: Miners earn rewards only by following the rules, so they have a financial incentive to keep the network secure.
The Mining Puzzle Explained
The puzzle miners solve involves finding a number called a “nonce” that, when combined with the block’s data and passed through a cryptographic hash function, produces a hash below a certain target. This target changes based on the network’s difficulty.
Because hash functions produce unpredictable outputs, miners must try many different nonces before finding a valid one. This trial-and-error process requires significant computing power and electricity.
What Happens When a Block Is Added
When a miner finds a valid nonce, they broadcast the new block to the network. Other miners verify the block’s validity and add it to their copy of the blockchain. This block contains:
A list of verified transactions
The nonce that solved the puzzle
A reference to the previous block’s hash
Adding a block confirms the included transactions and extends the blockchain, making it harder to change past data.
Mining Rewards and Incentives
Miners receive two types of rewards:
Block reward: New Bitcoin created with each block. This reward started at 50 BTC in 2009 and halves approximately every four years. As of 2026, the reward is 3.125 BTC per block.
Transaction fees: Small fees paid by users to prioritize their transactions.
These rewards motivate miners to invest in hardware and electricity to support the network.
Mining Hardware and Energy Use
Mining started with regular computers but quickly moved to specialized hardware called ASICs (Application-Specific Integrated Circuits). These devices are designed solely for mining and are much more efficient than general-purpose computers.
Mining consumes a lot of electricity, which has raised environmental concerns. Some miners use renewable energy or locate operations in areas with cheap power to reduce costs and environmental impact.
Mining Pools and Collaboration
Because mining is competitive and resource-intensive, many miners join mining pools. Pools combine the computing power of many miners to increase the chances of solving a block. When the pool earns rewards, they distribute them among members based on contributed power.
This approach provides more steady income for miners but also concentrates mining power, which can raise questions about network decentralization.
The Future of Bitcoin Mining
Bitcoin mining will continue to evolve as technology improves and the block reward decreases. Eventually, miners will rely mostly on transaction fees for income. This shift could affect network security and transaction costs.
